Help Out at Your Parks - Natural Areas First Friday Workdays
Rockford Park District welcomes help from the public for monthly First Friday Workdays, when volunteer stewards work with Park District staff on the first Friday of each month on restoring natural areas at Searls Nature Preserve, Seth B. Atwood Park, Hall Memorial Park, and Anna Page Conservation Forest.
Natural Areas First Friday Workdays are conducted monthly year-round from 8 am until noon. Upcoming dates and locations are: May 3, Anna Page Conservation Forest; June 7, Searls Nature Preserve; July 5, Seth B. Atwood Park, and August 2, 2019, Seth B. Atwood Park.
Volunteer stewards should come dressed for the weather; long pants and closed-toe shoes are required year-round. Tools (loppers, hand saws, hand pruners, shovels) and work gloves will be provided, however, volunteers are free to bring tools. Water to fill reusable bottles and snacks will also be provided.
All ages are welcome; youth under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Families and other types of groups can enjoy spending time together outdoors while knowing their contributions of time and effort help benefit nature and the community; this is a great opportunity for scout groups, youth groups, or those looking for service hours. Groups of five or more who plan to attend the workdays are asked to email the Conservation Supervisor at firstname.lastname@example.org a few days in advance to advise staff of attendance.
Work duties vary, and will include removal of weeds and invasive brush, planting native plants and trees, and native seed collection. All seeds collected will be used for current and future restoration projects. Volunteer stewards will also get a chance to learn about each unique ecosystem in which they work, and why it’s important to protect these areas.
