Therapeutic Recreation Internship Program

The Rockford Park District Therapeutic Recreation department offers an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a career in therapeutic recreation and as required by National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCRTC).  The Therapeutic Recreation Department offers an internship opportunity to students who attend an accredited Therapeutic Recreation program.  An intern will be directly supervised by a Certificated Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and the experience meets all standard set by the NCTRC. The internship focuses on therapeutic recreation in the community setting and will provide exposure to specialty programs, inclusion services and adapted sports. This internship is designed to increase the intern’s independence in completing assessments, planning and implementation of programs as well as the evaluation and documentation process as the internship progresses.  An intern will complete a project and a case study during their internship.

The Intern experience will include:

  • Hands on experience with specialty, inclusive and adapted programs in the community setting

  • Exposure to various recreation administration duties (e.g., outreach, budgeting, marketing)

  • Exposure to a wide spectrum of physical, emotional, behavioral and intellectual disabilities

  • Exposure to the APIE-D process in the community setting

  • Experience the delivery of TR services in one or more roles (e.g. leadership, participation, documentation, evaluation, administration)
