Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Postponed Due to An Unexpected Mechanical Issue Affecting Snowmaking Equipment
ROCKFORD, IL – The 40th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition scheduled for January 28-31, 2026 at Sinnissippi Park, 1401 N. Second Street, Rockford, has been postponed to February 11-14, 2026.
In 2016, the Rockford Park District acquired a snow-making machine capable of running on city water at Sinnissippi Park. Man-made snow is preferred by the sculptors because it’s a much purer product to work with during the competition. During a routine test of the snowmaking equipment, a mechanical issue took place, and the Rockford Park District is now waiting on a part that is needed to repair this specialized equipment.
The Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition is a free, family-friendly community winter event organized by the Rockford Park District that draws artists, families, and winter enthusiasts from across the region to showcase large-scale sculptures crafted from compacted snow blocks. The event brings teams from around the state to Rockford to compete, and there is also a high school division. Traditionally a highlight of the winter season, the event brings more than 30,000 people to the community and contributes to community engagement and tourism during the colder months.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. Although we’ve had recent snowfall, moving forward with our planned snowmaking efforts is in the best interest of the competition. We look forward to welcoming everyone in February to celebrate the artistry of snow sculpting,” said Kellie Olivencia, Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Event Director.
