Alpine Park’s Paulyground Reimagined
More than 20 years after Paulyground first opened, its legacy of inclusion continues.
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Rockford Park District celebrated the reopening of Paulyground at Alpine Park. Originally designed in 2003 by Rockford Park District landscape architect Mike Pauly, the playground was the first universally designed play area in both our district and the surrounding region, setting a new standard for accessible play.
Today, that vision has been reimagined for a new generation. The updated playground features inclusive play experiences that reflect our ongoing commitment to ensuring children of all abilities can experience the power of play, build connections, and feel a true sense of belonging.
The reopening is part of a $1.36 million investment in Alpine Park, made possible through the support of Representative Dave Vella and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources through an OSLAD grant, along with the dedication of our staff, project partners, and community members who helped shape the vision for this space.
