New Ways to Play at Wentland Sports Complex

LOVES PARK, IL – The Rockford Park District celebrated the grand opening of a new playground and the first-ever splash pad in Loves Park at Wentland Sports Complex, 9400 Forest Hills Road, Loves Park, marking the completion of a more than $1 million investment in one of the community's most popular recreational destinations. The project reflects the Rockford Park District's ongoing commitment to creating parks and amenities that meet the community's evolving needs while providing high-quality spaces where children and families can play, connect, and create lasting memories.

In 2023, the Rockford Park District gathered community feedback as it prepared to reimagine the well-loved wooden playground at Wentland Sports Complex, creating a more engaging and inclusive space for children of all abilities to explore, imagine, and connect through play. Community input played a key role in shaping the project. During the planning process, residents were invited to share feedback on the types of play experiences they wanted to see. Their input directly influenced the selection of the playground equipment and helped ensure the finished space reflects the interests and needs of the families who will enjoy it for years to come. The renovated playground now includes an embankment slide, an accessible swing, an inclusive whirl, and one of the tallest playground structures within the Rockford Park District. A shaded picnic area was also added near the playground, along with a communication board, to enhance accessibility and support children who are nonverbal or have communication challenges. Wentland Sports Complex is also the site of the first spray pad in Loves Park, which features a bucket that slowly fills with water until it tips over, sending a refreshing splash down.

The additions mark another investment in creating vibrant recreational spaces that enhance quality of life for residents. The improvements are part of the Rockford Park District's ongoing commitment to investing in parks and recreational amenities that meet the community's evolving needs while supporting its Strategic and Action Plan priorities of enhancing park spaces, promoting healthy lifestyles, and creating vibrant community gathering places.
